A bit about me...
My aesthetic stems from my studies of graphic design, typography and photography peppered with flavors of Caribbean and European living. I enjoy incorporating textures, patterns, layers and bold colors into my work with acrylics, watercolors, hand-crafted papers and digital artwork..
Originally from North Carolina, I've lived in The Netherlands, US Virgin Islands, Barcelona and Sitges (a small beach village about 30 minutes south of Barcelona). I've recently returned to the US and am currently based in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.
My design work has been published in Expressive Typography: The Word As Image and in Windhover, NC State University's literary and arts magazine. I've had acrylic and mixed media pieces shown in 2015 St. Croix Art Thursday event, 2017 St. Croix LGBTQ Pride exhibition and 2019 St. Croix Emerging Artist's Show. In 2017, I was honored to have one of my acrylic pieces selected to be part of The Ryan White Program's campaign for HIV prevention, testing and treatment. In 2019, my piece 'Whole of the Moon' was selected as the branding for St. Croix's 'Pride Thru Art' exhibition at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. In the Spring of 2022, I was the featured artist at SHUG's at Brooklyn South Square in Salisbury, NC. I had 3 pieces accepted into the 'Art For All I Am' show at Waterworks Gallery, Salisbury, NC that ran from September 2022 - January 2023.
Currently I have original pieces available at several locations on St. Croix, USVI (Undercover Books, From The Gecko Boutique, Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts). I'm working very hard with my digital artwork to break into the surface pattern design world. I believe my style works well in this arena.
I'm incredibly excited to share my creative outlet with you. I've grabbed loads of inspiration from my travels and I can't wait to put them to canvas (both literal and digital).
All the best to you -
Melissa
